Already there are over a billion people who speak Mandarin. A growing force on the international stage, Mandarin will be the most influential language in the 21st century.
Mandarin Level 1
Students are not expected to have any prior knowledge of Mandarin when they begin this course. Hansa's Level 1 Mandarin course covers the first eight units of Chinese for Beginners, by Yi Ren and Xiayuan Liang, which is included in the course fee. At this level, you will learn Pinyin, a writing system that uses the Roman letters you are already familiar with and shows you the correct intonation for each sound, and you will also begin to learn Chinese characters. You will learn to distinguish the four tones, structure sentences correctly, greet people and introduce yourself, express apologies and reasons, count, say the time, name months and days, and describe the weather. You will also master key verbs and idioms.
Mandarin Level 2
The Level 2 Mandarin course reviews everything covered in Hansa's Level 1 course and goes on to finish the second half of Chinese for Beginners. You will learn to make phone calls and ask for directions. You will also practise having conversations in a variety of settings: on a trip, in a bank, in a store, etc. We will work to improve your pronunciation and give you more extensive knowledge of Chinese culture.
Mandarin Level 3
In Level 3, you will increase your range of grammatical structures and vocabulary, including idiomatic expressions. You will practise making questions and statements and increase your fluency and confidence in daily situations. Grammar topics include comparison, partitives, conjunctions, and passive voice. You will learn a variety of sentence structures in order to speak more naturally, and you will continue to deepen your knowledge of Chinese culture.
Payment and registration must be received before the registration deadline. Books and materials are included within the course tuition.
